Temporary Recreation Leader I (Sports)

Job Description:


Plans, organizes, and facilitates a variety of sports activities/games at the sports complex; enforce safety and City policies and procedures; provide guidance to participants regarding equipment use and safety; check equipment for needed repairs and return equipment to storage upon program completion.

This position is required to work on weekends and evenings. Essential Functions

* Maintains and keeps Sports Complex fields playable during and after tournament games.
* Drags and lines infields after games have been completed.
* rakes base paths, mounds and batter boxes in between games.
* Applies water on infield playing surface for dust control between games.
* Picks up litter throughout the complex.
* Empties trash cans and installs new liners.
* Sweeps out dug outs.
* Keeps restrooms stocked and clean.
* Works with other staff to maintain equipment used.
* Completes daily forms and reports.
* Assists sports complex users by answering questions.
* Assures playing areas and sports equipment is in good, safe playing condition.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
* Ability to solve problems, build relationships with the public and volunteers and show compassion.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Special Requirements/Success Factors

Must have one year of experience in public recreation, or related field. This position is required to work on weekends and evenings.

Any equivalent combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying.


Parks & Recreation department policies and regulations.

City ordinances and state statutes for park use.

Park safety practices


Understand and follow safe working practices

Communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing

Handle encounters with hostile or irate individuals

Conduct equipment or facility checks

Effectively communicate verbally and in writing

Keep accurate records; prepare accurate and daily reports

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff and the public


Valid Arizona driver's license.

Must operate assigned vehicle on a regular basis.

Applicants will be required to undergo drug testing prior to employment and will be subject to further

drug and alcohol testing throughout their period of employment in accordance with the City of Glendale

Substance Abuse policy.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

Requires lifting of up to 50 pounds. Must be able to enter and exit a city vehicle.

Facilitates various recreation/sports programs and activities involving walking, running, bending, stooping, jumping, reaching, and hand or arm and eye movement.


Exposure to hot and varying weather conditions.

Transports and sets up sports equipment onsite.

May occasionally encounter hostile or irate individual.
