Job Description:

Performs skilled gardening work in planting, cultivating, and maintaining lawns, plants, and shrubs.SUPERVISION EXERCISED AND RECEIVEDSupervision received from the Grounds Supervisor.Examples of Duties: Prepares garden beds for planting and surfaces and soils for laying sod by rototilling and shoveling soil in order to maintain landscaped areas.Plants, cultivates, trims, prunes, shapes, stakes, fertilizes, sprays, waters, weeds, transplants, removes hazardous or unnecessary growths from, and maintains trees, grass, flowers, hedges, and shrubs with gardening equipment (e.g. mowers, stakes, edgers, sprayers, trimmers, fertilizers, chainsaws, tractors, pruning handsaws, shears, weed eaters, blowers, aerators, rakes, shovels, sweepers, water hoses, and cultivators) in order to maintain right of way for roads, sidewalks, and utilities and to improve the appearance, health and value of the college grounds.Treats plant disease and pest problems by mixing and applying insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides as needed to areas infested with weeds, pests, and insects in accordance with the label instructions.Clears away leaves, brush, clippings, litter and other debris from sidewalks, campus grounds and parking areas using rakes, brooms, power blowers, street sweeper, and water hoses as appropriate in order to maintain right of way and appearance for roads, sidewalks, campus grounds, and/or utilities.Disposes of green waste on campus by bagging clippings and other green materials and transporting to dumpsters using an electric cart to maintain a clean campus environment.Operates electric carts following safe driving practices in order to transport materials, tools and equipment; checks cart water level and adds water as necessary.Maintains and adjusts sprinkler systems by regularly checking and removing debris, ensuring the appropriate areas are irrigated, checking and replacing the battery of the sprinkler system annually, and making adjustments as necessary.Clears ground storm drains of debris and other blockage with a rake and/or broom in order to maintain their proper function.Responds to emergency situations related to irrigation issues as well as downed trees or limbs (e.g. locating leaks and shutting off valves and trimming branches and limbs for easier disposal) as necessary under the direction of the Grounds Supervisor to ensure that the area is safe and secure.Adjusts and performs minor maintenance on power gardening equipment and tools (e.g. replacing blades and worn belts and adding oil) as necessary to maintain proper functioning; notifies the Grounds Supervisor if more involved maintenance is required.Performs other related duties as assigned.Minimum Qualifications: Knowledge of:Landscaping and maintenance of garden beds, including methods, procedures and equipment used (e.g. rototillers, and shovels).Methods, materials, and equipment used in propagating, trimming, shaping, fertilizing, weeding, cultivating, pruning, and caring for grass, hedges, flowers, shrubs, trees, and lawns grown in Southern California (e.g. aerators, cultivators, mowers, edgers, fertilizers, tractors, pruning and handsaws, weed eaters, and blowers).Appropriate uses of pesticides, insecticides and herbicides to treat plant disease and pest problems.Protection and safety requirements needed when working with power equipment and hazardous or toxic material (e.g. wearing proper safety glasses, gloves and steel toed shoes).Techniques to safely operate power equipment and handle, mix, and apply hazardous or toxic material.The use and maintenance of gardening equipment used to sweep, blow, and water away leaves, brush, clippings, litter, and other debris from sidewalks, campus grounds and parking areas (e.g. power blowers, brooms, street sweeper, and water hoses).Irrigation and sprinkler system adjustment and maintenance.Routine maintenance required for power gardening equipment and tools (e.g. replacing blades and worn belts and adding oil).Safe driving practices using an electric cart.Pests, weeds, and insects common to Southern California and the most effective insecticides, herbicides, and pesticides to use for each type.Ability to:Drive an electric cart in order to transport materials, tools and equipment.Mix and apply pesticides, insecticides and herbicides in accordance with the printed instructions to treat plant disease and pest problems.Adhere to safety requirements when working with power equipment and/or handling hazardous or toxic materials (e.g. wearing proper safety glasses, gloves and steel toed shoes.)Maintain and adjust irrigation and sprinkler systems.Maintain power gardening equipment and tools (e.g. replacing blades and worn belts, and adding oil).Safely use gardening equipment (e.g. including mowers, edgers, trimmers, pruning handsaws, shears, cultivators, sprayers, fertilizers, stakes, aerators, tractors, chainsaws, shovels, weed eaters, rototillers, brooms, rakes, sweepers, and water hoses) to landscape and maintain district grounds, fields, and gardens.Understand and follow oral and written instructions.Identify different types of pests, insects, and weeds in order to determine the most effective pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides to use.Work cooperatively with others.Lift at least 50 pounds.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTSEducation:High School Diploma or equivalent.Experience:One year of experience in gardening, nursery, or grounds maintenance work.License:Possession of a valid State of California Class C driver's license.Other Requirements:Must be at least 18 year of age.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONSPhysical Demands:Manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination to grasp, hold, and operate hand and power tools and grounds equipment.Strength, stamina, and mobility to stand, walk, sit, reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, bend, and crouch for extended periods of time and lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.Visual acuity to see close, distant, and peripheral objects; adjust focus as necessary; and perceive depth and colors.Verbal and auditory abilities to communicate in person and over the phone or radio and hear machinery sounds and alarms.Working Conditions:Incumbents will work in an outdoor setting engaged in work of a physically active nature. Incumbents will occasionally be exposed to adverse weather conditions including hot and cold temperatures, direct sunlight, rain, and humidity. Work may be performed near vehicle and pedestrian traffic, on slippery or uneven surfaces, and in areas subject to insects and other animals.
