JOB SUMMARYResponsible for providing clinical dental services and preventive dental care in a community health center setting.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESExamines individuals requesting care, diagnoses their dental/oral conditions, prescribes and carries out, or directs others in carrying out, appropriate dental/oral treatment, or refers individuals for specialty consultation or treatment in conformance with approved clinical protocols and guidelinesRecords patient-dentist transactions as they occur in the patient's dental records so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contract, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment providedRequired to complete referrals, data collections instruments and other records or paper works as shall be required from time to timeEducates individuals in the nature of oral health related conditions and in the general promotion of oral health related disease preventionServes on the dental staff and other center committees as assignedPrepares specific reports as requested by the community health center's Medical DirectorAssists in the provision of continuing education, on the job training, and the orientation of community health center staff as requestedResponsible to adhere to the dental department policies, protocols and procedures as directed by the Medical Director which are in compliance with the most current accepted professional standardsAssists in the provision of technical assistance and health education to the community as requestedParticipates in short and long term program planning for the dental department and the agency, including development of goals and objectivesTravels when necessary to fulfill CCHC's needs and attends meetings as necessary to represent the dental departmentAssists in the coordination and integration of the corporation's dental programs and services with other corporate programs and services for the welfare of the patientsResponsible for personal full compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and center rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dentistry and the clinical provision of dental care as well as those relating to, but not limited to, personnel issues, work place safety, public health and confidentialityParticipates in recruitment/retention activities of the corporation as necessaryResponsible for supervising the dental assistants and dental hygienists of the community health center in the absence of the Medical DirectorPerforms other related and/or necessary tasks assigned by the Medical Director

EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEGraduation from an accredited dental schoolCompletion of an accredited general practice residency program is preferredAbility to be clinically fluent in Spanish preferred but not requiredUnrestricted license to practice dentistry in the State of CaliforniaDPS and DEA registrationKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIESKnowledge of public health principles and practices preferredExcellent interpersonal and written communication skills requiredRequires a comprehensive knowledge of primary dental care in outpatient settingsKnowledge of the principles and practice of modern dentistry as related to public health organizations and community health programs as well as current social and economic problems pertaining to public health and their impact on primary health careAbility to keep all Dental and DEA License, CME, etc., currentAbility to know how to listen, as well as how to explain complicated conditions or procedures to someone with no medical backgroundMust have the analytical skills to review symptoms and test results and determine a diagnosis and appropriate treatmentGood interpersonal skills are needed in communicating clearly and compassionately with patients and their familiesAbility to stay abreast of new techniques, new equipment and be contemporary with the latest medical discoveriesEffectively work patients into their schedules as the caseload demands and respond to a variety of unforeseen daily circumstances, including emergency care of patientsAbility to see patients in a timely and efficient manner, staying reasonably on time for scheduled appointments throughout the day, unless exceptional circumstances occurAbility to find solutions when barriers are identifiedStrong documentation skillsAbility to multi-task and prioritize when neededAbility to independently seek out resources and work collaborativelyAbility to read, understand and follow oral and written instructionsExperience and work ethics that supports working within a high functioning, team-oriented environmentDemonstrates a willingness and ability to work under supervisionAbility to develop and maintain good working relationships with staffAbility to use computer and learn new software programsExcellent interpersonal skills reflecting clarity and diplomacy and the ability to communicate accurately and effectively with all levels of staff and managementDemonstrates ability to work in a regulatory climate that includes oversight of state and federal entities, payer contracts etc.Possesses ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writingPossesses genuine respect for others and acceptance of their individual social and cultural traitsProficient knowledge of Microsoft OutlookAble to travel and attend professional meetings, conferences, trainings and clinic sitesDemonstrate flexibility, enthusiasm, and willingness to cooperate while working with others in multi-disciplinary teamsPerforms other related duties as assignedPHYSICAL DEMANDSPosition requires prolonged sitting at a computer, some bending, lifting, stooping and stretching. Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a computer keyboard, photocopy machine, telephone, and other office equipment is also required.
